What is the problem with Mobile Search at the moment?

Mobile sites are usually scaled down versions of online sites, therefore manipulating the text with keywords can be tricky; there simply isn’t as much text to manipulate.

Typically, when a consumer searches the internet from a mobile device they are taken to the PC version of the site first. Only then are they redirected to a mobile site – when and if it exists. Sometimes the PC site may not even redirect to the mobile site! All of this redirecting takes time – and on mobile Internet, time costs money.

MetaTXTas a solution?

Meta Data is an ideal way in which to ensure that the main focus of the site is highlighted. The MetaTXT file is the foundation of good search engine optimisation. Regardless of whether a site is a wap, m., .mobi or .com, MetaTXT will capture a site’s URL, location, mobile site entry points, keywords, and description and more helping search engines return the most relevant content, rendered appropriately for the mobile device used.

Improvements in mobile search rely on the mass adoption of the MetaTXT standard. Web site developers need to generate the MetaTXT file and add it to their root directory. Search engines need to crawl for MetaTXT files first, then crawl the site if they none exists. Consumers need to notice an improvement in their mobile search experience, and be encouraged to increase their mobile Internet usage.

To assist in the development and promotion of MetaTXT as a possible tool in driving mobile Internet traffic through improving mobile search for consumers, a MetaTXT working group has been established. With support from the industry and input from stakeholders across the mobile Internet space, it is intended that the MetaTXT standard be an independently verified and proven concept. MetaTXT will revolutionise mobile search.
